About the session

Do you know the difference between systemic and institutional racism? Do you understand why ‘colour-blindness’, a well-intentioned response to racism, is actually more harmful than helpful? And most importantly, can you clearly recognise racism and understand when and how to act when you encounter racism? Language shapes the way we perceive the world. Using the correct terms can enable understanding of some specific complexities around racism and champion historically marginalised communities, both in the workplace and in society more widely.

In a session led by former BFI’s Race Equality Lead and Co-Director of the Anti-Racist Taskforce for European Film Academy Rico Johnson-Sinclair, we will collectively look at what anti-racism is and how to engage with it as a person who isn’t racialised. Together we will foster understanding and appropriate language when discussing historically marginalised communities and have this inform practices in your organisation.

The session will be split into two halves, the first looks at language and intent, and the second half will look at structures, systems and actions that can help resolve both intentional and unintentional discriminatory practices in your work.

After the session, you will also have access to consultation and a further Zoom session which looks at building anti-racist policies and procedures in your respective.

Please come with an open mind and a willingness to learn and be challenged.

Rico Johnson Sinclair is a consultant and festival programmer.  After working with Flatpack Festival in Birmingham, Rico Johnson-Sinclair went on to build CineQ, a queer film festival that prioritises queer and trans, Black and Indigenous people and people of colour which is now in its 6th year. Outside of programming and exhibition, Rico consults with organisations around events that focus on inclusion and diversity and works with talent to develop emerging voices centring on untold stories from historically marginalised communities in partnership with organisations such as European Film Academy and The New Black Film Collective. His last role was as Race Equality Lead for the British Film Institute, working to bring a critical perspective into conversations about race in the film industry and working intersectionality to develop work around class, disability and gender from an intersectional perspective.
