About the session

When we make documentary film we endeavour to tell the stories which shape our humanity as it really is. But how can we objectively empower the subject that we seek to champion in a way that is free from exploitation?

In a session led by former BFI’s Race Equality Lead and Co-Director of the Anti-Racist Taskforce for European Film Academy Rico Johnson-Sinclair, we will delve into Authentic Authorship and Positionality in order to arm documentary filmmakers with the tools to advocate for historically marginalised communities and be conscious of some of the ways the documentary film industry acts contrary to the original ambitions of the filmmaker.

We will look at power dynamics between filmmaker and subject, with a focus on practising and building better trust between you and the communities you wish to speak to.

Rico Johnson Sinclair is a consultant and festival programmer.  After working with Flatpack Festival in Birmingham, Rico Johnson-Sinclair went on to build CineQ, a queer film festival that prioritises queer and trans, Black and Indigenous people and people of colour which is now in its 6th year. Outside of programming and exhibition, Rico consults with organisations around events that focus on inclusion and diversity and works with talent to develop emerging voices centring on untold stories from historically marginalised communities in partnership with organisations such as European Film Academy and The New Black Film Collective. His last role was as Race Equality Lead for the British Film Institute, working to bring a critical perspective into conversations about race in the film industry and working intersectionality to develop work around class, disability and gender from an intersectional perspective.
